Dear Alumni and Friends,

Welcome to the first installment of CESA News. This section of the website is intended to keep the alumni informed of current events and activities pertaining to Virginia Tech’s Center for Europeans Studies and Architecture in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland. We have very high hopes for this section with plans of future editions to include commentary from the program’s director, resident professors and resident students.

A lot is going on with the program at this time. A new Academic Director has been appointed, extensive maintenance is currently under way at Casa Maderni and probably most important, Virginia Tech is investing efforts toward establishing CESA as the global centerpiece for the university community.

Earlier this year, Ron Daniel was appointed academic director of CESA. Mr. Daniel is a graduate of Virginia Tech and former department head of Architecture and Industrial Design. In 1997, Mr. Daniel was appointed as Associate Provost of Undergraduate Studies, an appointment he still holds and will administer in conjunction with his duties as academic director of CESA. Mr. Daniel is very positive about the future of the program and is very excited about the establishment of the Riva San Vitale Alumni Association.

For those of you who resided in Riva San Vitale during the winter months, you may recall the wind that rolled off Lake Lugano and caused the howl and whistles that made their way through the 300 year-old window frames. This endearing characteristic that often lulled me to sleep at night will soon be no more. Casa Maderni is undergoing a facelift. New modern windows are currently being installed at the Casa. But not to worry, since the Casa lies in the residential district of the town, strict architectural guidelines are being followed to insure the historical integrity and continuity of the Casa’s appearance. This facelift should improve the efficiency of the heating system in turn reducing the energy costs of operating the Casa. Be sure to check back soon to view pictures of the maintenance project.

Finally, Virginia Tech has recently begun to step up the programs presence as a global educational centerpiece in the university community. Please take some time to read this recent press release concerning the role of CESA as part of Virginia Tech’s educational strategy.
